In November 1972, the all-male residential area Northwest Quad was set to become a co-ed living facility. Jim Milligan, Northwest Quad area coordinator at the time, said there needed to be an improvement in social interaction within the campus.
A poll taken of residents at the time showed that about 70 percent of men living in Northwest Quad were in favor of this change, while many women around campus voiced complaints. Women raised concerns about the quality of Northwest Quad’s bathrooms, as well as the $22 fee they would be charged to reinstall their telephones if they moved to Northwest Quad.
