The University of Connecticut Hartford campus was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a faculty member burned microwave popcorn in the Student Services suite, according to the UConn Police Department.

About 150 students left the Hartford Times Building when fire alarms set off around 4:30 p.m. No one was injured and no damage was reported, officer Fernando Rodriguez said.

“The smoke from the (popcorn) bag set off the alarm,” Rodriguez said.

The evacuation lasted about 15 minutes.

Saman Shahid, a junior psychology major at the Hartford campus said the evacuation process was smooth and although she didn’t know what caused the evacuation, she felt safe.

“The fire trucks were there in like a snap so it was very quick of them,” Shahid said.

Andrew Lau, a sophomore landscape architecture major at the Hartford campus said the process of evacuating the building was slow due to a large number of students trying to exit from the same staircase.
