The UConn women’s basketball program announced Tuesday that Sophomore Mikayla Coombs intends to transfer from the university.

“We appreciate Mikayla for her effort and for being a great teammate the last two seasons,” UConn head coach Geno Auriemma said in a release. “We wish Mikayla and her family the best as she continues her college career.”

Coombs carved out a niche this season as a high-energy player on defense. She averaged the seventh highest minutes (11.5) per game. However, she could never really develop her offensive game, as she averaged only .9 points per game on about 25 percent shooting from the field.

The guard came to UConn as a member of the Class of 2017, when she was the No. 13 overall recruit. With Coombs deciding to transfer and Lexi Gordon and Andra Espinoza-Hunter already gone, Megan Walker is the lone recruit from the Class of 2017 still on the Huskies.

As of today, UConn has only eight players on its roster. Incoming freshman Aubrey Griffin is the lone newcomer for the 2019-2020 season, so far.

“I would like to thank the UConn community and the coaching staff for everything they have done for me during my time here,” Coombs said in a release. “I wish everyone at UConn the best, and I am excited for the next chapter.”
