The UConn men’s hockey team will have tough sledding ahead of them on Thursday as they get a visit from the No.13 ranked Northeastern Huskies.
UConn beat New Hampshire 4-1 in its last game, after an offensive outburst in the third period. The Huskies were led by 39 saves from goaltender Morgan Fisher, two goals from forward Natalie Snodgrass, and a goal each from Morgan Wabick and Briana Colangelo. The three-goal third period earned them the win after going down 1-0 in the first period and Snodgrass tied it up in the second.
UConn (7-14-1) fell behind early, surrendering a goal to Chase Zieky during the fifth minute of the game. Zieky is one of three transfers recently added to this RPI team, and made them a much different team than the one UConn saw earlier in the season. After trading penalties in the 13th and 14th minutes, UConn and RPI (7-15) failed to capitalize, and the first period ended 1-0.
The two schools met just four games into the regular season, and despite a trio of goals from Emily Reid, Briana Colangelo and Rebecca Lindblad, fell by a score of 5-3, largely due to the Wildcats scoring on two of their whopping eight power play opportunities while the Huskies were unable to score on any of their three.
Led by sophomore forward Natalie Snodgrass’ goal late in Friday’s matchup and her hat trick on Saturday, the Huskies were able to sweep the season series against Holy Cross. Snodgrass is leading UConn in points, with 20. Her goals were assisted by: Catherine Crawley (twice), Taylor Wabick, and Viki Harkness. She also went a combined 31-5 on face-offs over the two games. Since the break ended, the Minnesota native has been on a goal-scoring tear with six in just three games.
