Opinion: Autistic students deserve better than Autism Speaks 

Autism Speaks has consistently perpetuated harmful stereotypes about autistic people. If this club is really committed to helping autistic people and their families, they should listen to Autistic advocates and realize that Autism Speaks is harmful. Advocating for autistic people is an important issue, but doing it wrong is so much more harmful than not doing it at all.

From brand-new clubs like the Cooking Club to larger, well-known organizations like PIRG and SUBOG, the Fall Involvement Fair allowed students to find a group that allowed them to have fun, serve their community, connect with people in their major and much more.

As many people know, the University of Connecticut’s Involvement Fair will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 4. This bi-annual fair will have tables set up all over Fairfield Way, advertising a large variety of clubs, ensuring that each student who attends will leave interested in at least one club.

Despite the heat, dozens of tables lined Fairfield Way for the Fall 2018 Involvement Fair to advertise various extracurricular activities. Over 500 academic, environmental, Greek, fitness, service, religious, cultural, political and many other types of clubs handed out colored flyers and added students to their email lists.
