Women’s Tennis: Huskies shut out by Terriers in Boston

The Huskies were riding off of a high after their two consecutive wins against Butler and Sacred Heart, and they continued to ride into that high as they faced the Boston University Terriers on Wednesday. But despite their efforts, the program was shut out, 7-0.

This loss moved their current record to 7-5.

Juniors Olivia Wright and Maria Constantinou were able to execute their winning ways and win the first doubles match 5-3. Unfortunately for the Huskies,  the Terrier’s second doubles team of senior Victoria Carlsten and sophomore Nina Gulbransen, along with their triple doubles team of senior Kaitlin Tan and sophomore Emily Zhao, swept the Huskies and clinched the doubles point.

Despite Connecticut’s efforts, Zhao took the rest of the sets 6-4,10-6. As a result, the Terriers notched the rest of the singles, despite Cameron Didion’s victory over the BU sophomore in the first set.

“Overall, this was not the result we were looking for, but we learned a few things that we need to focus on moving forward. The team is looking forward to playing some outdoor tennis next week in Georgia,” head coach Glen Marshall said after the match. “In singles today, Cam was playing very well but lost a tough 3-set match in a tiebreaker.  Overall, this was not the result we were looking for, but we learned a few things that we need to focus on moving forward.”

The Huskies will head on the road again to Georgia for a match on Saturday, March 9, where they will face Mercer with the first serve scheduled for noon. Then, on Sunday March 10, they will face Valdosta State with the first serve scheduled for 10 a.m.

Both Mercer and Valdosta State are coming off losses against Florida State and Flagler. UConn hopes to put this loss behind them and two more wins back to Storrs to get to 9-5.

An athlete to look out for on Mercer’s team is senior Teodora Ristic. who is 16-4 this season. Ristic and her doubles partner graduate student Mariella Minetti have been a menace to opponents this season and are 8-0 on the season. If Wright and Constainou take these two down in doubles and Didion takes down Ristic, it should translate into a win for UConn.
