UConn Professors Inducted into Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering

The induction of 12 University of Connecticut professors into the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE) was announced on March 18.

“The Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering is a private, nonprofit, public-service institution patterned after the National Academy of Sciences,” the CASE website said.

There are 36 new inductees this year, according to the website. This list includes professors from Yale as well as members of notable positions at organizations such as General Dynamics, IBM and Pratt & Whitney.

“The Academy identifies and studies issues and technological advances that are or should be of concern to the people of Connecticut, and provides unbiased, expert advice on science- and technology-related issues to state government and other Connecticut institutions,” the CASE website said. “It is comprised of distinguished scientists and engineers from Connecticut’s academic, industrial, and institutional communities.”

The inductees from UConn include professors versed in chemistry, statistics, horticulture, engineering and more.

The UConn professors to be inducted into CASE are Gerald Berkowitz, Ming-Hui Chen, Jie He, Omer Khan, Guozhen Lu, Xiuling Lu, Vijay Rathinam, Kumar Venkitanarayanan, Ji-Cheng Zhao, Jing Zhao, Guoan Zheng and Xiao-Dong Zhou.

“UConn’s inductees to CASE exemplify the University’s commitment to excellence across many disciplines,” says UConn’s vice president for research, innovation and entrepreneurship, Pamir Alpay, said in an interview with UConn Today. Alpay is a member of CASE.

“Through their work as researchers and as educators, these faculty members are contributing to advancing science and engineering as they instruct the next generation to make its own positive impact,” Alpay said. “Congratulations to all of UConn’s 2025 inductees and thank you for your dedicated work on behalf of the State of Connecticut.”

UConn and both its College of Engineering and its School of Medicine are supporters of CASE. Other supporters include RTX, Yale and Pratt & Whitney.

According to the CASE website, prospective members must live or work in Connecticut and are selected through an annual election process. Scientists and engineers will also be considered if they achieved either “scientific distinction achieved through significant original contribution in theory or application” or “unusual accomplishments in the pioneering of new and developing fields of applied science and technology.”

The inductees have been invited to the Academy’s 50th Annual Dinner on May 28, when they will be formally introduced, according to the UConn Today article
