After having one of the best seasons in UConn men’s hockey history, reaching new and record-breaking heights, the Huskies’ players are being rewarded. On Friday night at the Frozen Four in St. Louis Missouri, Joey Muldowney of the Ice Bus was named a 2024-25 CCM/ACHA Men’s Hockey All-American as one of the nation’s top 24 college hockey players. The sophomore from Lake View, New York earned a spot on the East Second Team.
Muldowney is the third UConn men’s hockey player to earn All-American status during the program’s Division I era (1998-present). He is also the first since Ryan Tverberg was named Second Team All-American after the 2022-23 season. The other Huskies All-American player was Johnny Evans in the 2020-21 season. In this year’s selection, there were eight Hockey East players to be named in the All-American honors, including Muldowney.
This season, Muldowney played in all 39 games for the Ice Bus, leading the team with 29 goals, which is second amongst Hockey East scorers and second in all scorers in the country. The sophomore forward finished the year with 47 points, also leading UConn and setting a new program record for the most points in a single season. In addition, Muldowney scored three hat tricks throughout the season, including one in the Hockey East semi-final win over Boston University, which sent the Huskies to the championship game.
Earlier in the month, Joey Muldowney was named New England Hockey Writers Association Most Improved Player, which is no surprise, as his individual statistics developed significantly since his freshman season. In his rookie campaign, Muldowney scored five goals with nine assists. In the first half of this season, the forward only had four goals, but he exploded offensively after the winter break. Muldowney scored in the Holiday Face-Off tournament final against Wisconsin, added two more in the Huskies next game against Harvard and scored a whopping four goals in an upset win against Maine shortly after. Muldowney never looked back on offense and rode the wave until the end of the season, where he finished with 29 goals and 47 points total.
Muldowney carved his name in UConn Hockey history with his numbers this season. The sophomore became the program record holder for most hat tricks (3) and goals scored in a single season in the Hockey East era. Muldowney was recognized for many accolades from this season, including being named a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and a New England All-Star.
The Men’s Hockey All-American players are chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches Association, and they are all sponsored by CCM Hockey. CCM Hockey is a massive brand focused on helping the performance of hockey players by delivering head-to-toe hockey equipment to players all around the world.
Muldowney was selected in the sixth round of the NHL Draft back in 2022 to the San Jose Sharks. Despite his breakout season and rumors that he is headed to the NHL, Muldowney is expected to return for his junior year and run it back with the young and talent-filled Ice Bus for the 2025-26 season.
