Roundtable: Senior Scoop

Every year, graduating seniors at the University of Connecticut participate in the tradition of Senior Scoop, where they pitch and vote on what will be the official ice cream flavor of their class that gets made by the Dairy Bar. This year’s flavor is “Bleed Blueberry Bliss,” which features cheesecake with a blueberry swirl and Biscoff cookies. For our final Roundtable of the year, we asked Life writers to share their thoughts on this year’s flavor.

Naiiya Patel, Outgoing Business Manager (she/her/hers): As an avid senior scoop enthusiast, I could not wait until I became a senior to finally participate in the creation of a flavor. However, the selection committee did not fall in love with my black raspberry masterpiece, and we now have “Bleed Blueberry Bliss.” I have yet to try the senior scoop as a sign of protest, but all I want to say is, let’s go back to crazier days. I want to hear about insane flavors that make me go back to the Dairy Bar 20 times over. Flavors that don’t leave your mind and you wish it would become a permanent flavor. Those days.

Desirae Sin, Campus Correspondent (she/her/hers): Despite my immortal demeanor, lactose intolerance has been my kryptonite. Usually, I don’t care about the consequences, but Dairy Bar ice cream has defeated me time and time again. The only thing I’ve eaten there is their Husky Tracks, and I couldn’t even make it past the Cumberland Farms on Storrs Road without needing a bathroom. For everyone’s safety, I chose to stay away from the senior scoop and that cursed Dairy Bar. What happened in that bathroom is between me and God.

Samantha Brody, Incoming Associate Life Editor (she/her/hers): In anticipation of this roundtable, my friend and I took a bus up to East so I could try the senior scoop: a child-size “Bleed Blueberry Bliss” with marshmallow and peanut butter cups on top. I didn’t really like it. When it comes to any kind of sweets, nothing beats chocolate in my mind, so this choice was a little bit of a letdown. Blueberry and cheesecake is an interesting combination, but it didn’t really hit for me. I admire the creative naming though, even if it’s difficult to say aloud. If I’m being honest, I wish I’d ordered my friend’s “Geno’s Dough-ZEN” instead.

James Fitzpatrick, Outgoing Associate Life Editor (he/him/his): While I went to an ice cream social for psychology the other day — with Oreo and Husky Tracks ice cream — I didn’t try “Bleed Blueberry Bliss.” The cheesecake and blueberry swirl additions are valid, but I’ve never been a Biscotti guy. They’re typically too hard, and in a cold setting for ice cream, that would only get worse. The overpowering cinnamon would likely be subdued by the ice cream and cheesecake, though I do remember many other options in the Senior Scoop flavor list that were preferential to “Bleed Blueberry Bliss.” Either way, the Dairy Bar is overrated and overpriced.
