Men’s Hockey: Joey Muldowney named to USA Collegiate Selects roster for Spengler Cup

Joey Muldowney is known for his performance and efforts which led the UConn men’s hockey team to a historic 2024-25 season. The Huskies had a season with over 20 wins, with appearances in the Hockey East Tournament and their first-ever bid into the NCAA Frozen Four Tournament. Muldowney earned Second Team AHCA/CCM All-American Honors after scoring 29 goals, which ranked second amongst Division I players. The Lake View, N.Y. native finished the year with 27 points, leading the Huskies and setting a new program single-season record in points. He also became the record holder for most hat tricks (three) in a single season, and most goals scored in a single season in the Huskies’ Hockey East era. After the season, Muldowney earned Hockey East Second Team All-Star Honors, as well as New England Hockey Writers Association Most Improved Player.

With last season’s statistics and a strong start to this year’s campaign as he scored goals in both of the Huskies’ first two games against Colorado College, the accolades will keep coming for Muldowney. He will now help represent all of college hockey on a worldwide stage this December.

The Spengler Cup is an annual tournament held in Davos, Switzerland, typically featuring six club or national teams from Europe or North America. This is the first time that the tournament will include a college hockey team. The U.S. Collegiate Selects roster will be formed of active, non-freshman Division I players from any nationality as well as any conference or independent program.

Last week, the United States Collegiate Selects hockey team announced the “First Five” members of its inaugural team as Aiden Fink (Penn State), Mac Gadowsky (Penn State), Jake Livanavage (North Dakota), Alex Tracy (Minnesota State) and Connecticut’s own Joey Muldowney. Representing four of the six NCAA men’s ice hockey conferences, the five selected players are all returning AHCA/CCM All-Americans.

All returning First and Second Team AHCA/CCM All-Americans received an automatic invitation to the roster. Being one of the top goal scorers in the country also helped Muldowney earn his spot on Team USA. More participating players will be announced this month. UConn should have a few other players on their roster in contention for a spot on the U.S. Collegiate Selects team if they have strong performances early on. Some names to keep in mind are junior Jake Richard, senior Ryan Tattle or one of the defensemen.

To open the Spengler Cup, the U.S. Collegiate Selects team will face Team Canada on Dec. 26. During the six-day event, each team will play a minimum of three contests and maximum of five.

The final U.S. Collegiate Selects roster will consist of 25 student-athletes from across NCAA DI men’s ice hockey and each conference will be represented. The competition runs from Dec. 26-31 in Davos. There will be six participating teams in the 2025 edition, along with the Selects: host team HC Davos, Team Canada, HC Fribourg-Gotteron, Sparta Praha and IFK Helsinki.

The tournament will be broadcasted to over 50 countries. The official viewing medium of the tournament in the United States will be revealed at a later date.
