The 13th annual Pearlman Cup is set to begin

What’s coming, you may ask?

The Daily Campus dynasty, that’s what.

After winning the Pearlman Jam this past April, The Daily Campus spent this past summer pouring its blood, sweat and tears into preparation for this annual bout between two Tier III organizations, The Daily Campus and UCTV.

Behind this dynasty is a third-semester staff writer for the sports section, Jake McCreven. McCreven was a standout in last year’s game. The 5-foot-8 secret weapon was the squad’s MVP, racking up four picks and two touchdowns.

Now, McCreven returns to the gridiron this year, bringing in a new batch of recruits and unparalleled confidence in his team.

“I think we’re deeper this year,” McCreven said on what he feels the team can bring to this year’s Pearlman Cup. “I think we bring more to the table in terms of overall talent, whereas last year we had the attitude that we didn’t have the talent to compete with them. I think it’s balanced this year and I think both teams have a very, very good chance of winning.”

Some new players McCreven has recruited include, Bella Tomaino, who put on a performance for The Daily Campus in last spring’s Pearlman Jam as the greatest hype woman ever, Graham Wilker at the quarterback position, Kali Reed, Jack Ross and more.

In addition to these newcomers, The Daily Campus has a fair amount of returners, including fifth-semester Opinion Editor Tomas Hinckley, who famously lost his front tooth in last years clash.

“Breaking two of my front teeth was definitely annoying, and my dentist says that eventually I’ll actually need to get a root canal because the nerves in those teeth are probably gonna die sometime within the next 1-10 years,” Hinckley said. “Which is pretty crazy. But also, it just motivates me more. This game has left a permanent impact on me, so I just need to leave a permanent impact on it by leading the DC to victory for the first time in Pearlman history.”

Hinckley also said that in 30 years the Pearlman Cup will matter to him more, rather than his permanent tooth damage.

How much more dedication could you ask for from one team?

Alongside Hinckley last year was managing editor Connor Lafferty, who consistently gave McCreven good looks in last year’s matchup.

“Over 12 years, The Daily Campus has studied every possible play from UCTV,” Lafferty said. When asked about how the squad has been practicing, he said, “We haven’t been losing; we’ve been learning. This is the year we’ve been waiting for. This is the year we begin our dynasty.”

With just one slightly deflated football to their name, The Daily Campus plans to show up to Morrone Stadium on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. wearing white to counteract UCTV’s black.

Why?

Shrouded in black, UCTV will be remembered as the dynasty that fell to the triumphant journalists of The Daily Campus.

In the wise words of the UConn men’s basketball coach and back-to-back National Champion Dan Hurley, “You better get us now. Because it — it’s coming.”
