UConn faces Providence and No. 13 Creighton at home this weekend 

A week after going 1-1 at home, the UConn volleyball team will take on No. 13 Creighton and Providence this weekend. 

The Huskies dominated Georgetown 3-0 last Friday, Oct. 17, with Emma Werkmeister and Audrey Rome shining offensively. Werkmeister had 12 kills and Rome had 13 during the three-set match.

UConn won the first set 25-11, the second set 26-24 and the third set 25-23. The first two sets were won with a kill by Rome while the third set was won by an attack error from Georgetown’s Samantha Soderlund. 

UConn played Villanova the following day, falling 3-1. All four sets from the match were within three points of each other. Villanova won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-23. UConn won set three 25-23 and Villanova won the final set 26-24. 

Villanova’s top player was junior Abby Harrell who had 20 kills during the four sets, while UConn’s most notable player was Werkmeister who had 16 kills. 

UConn will face No. 13 Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 25, with Creighton winning five of the past seven matchups between the two teams. Creighton swept UConn 3-0 when the two teams played in September last year. 

The Huskies will face Providence on Sunday, Oct. 26, with UConn winning seven of the past nine matchups. UConn beat Providence 3-1 when they played at the end of last October. 

Creighton enters this weekend 15-5 and 8-0 in the Big East with losses against then-No. 2 Penn State, No. 2 Texas, then-No. 22 USC, then-No. 4 Louisville and No.1 Nebraska. Creighton is on a 10-game win streak. 

Providence enters this weekend 10-11 and 1-7 in the Big East and is on a four-game losing streak. 

An opposing player to look out for is Creighton senior Ava Martin, with 282 kills and over four kills a set in 20 matches. Another is Providence Sophia Adkins, who has 331.5 points on offense along with 280 kills. 

Midway through the season, UConn is 15-5 with their losses coming against Yale, DePaul, Marquette, Xavier and Villanova. 

Taylor Pannell has been one of the Huskies’ strongest players on attack, notching 382.5 points and 311 kills in 32 matches. Hanna Tylska has also been strong this season as she accrued 361.5 points and 333 kills on offense. 

The match versus Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 25, will be at 4 p.m. and the match versus Providence on Sunday, Oct. 26, will be at 2 p.m.
