On Monday, Dec. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m., SUBOG hosted Brushing to the Beat in the Student Union, where students gathered to paint vinyl records and relax before finals week.

The event had several tables set up with a stack of vinyl discs in the center and cleaning cups for the paintbrushes at each of the seats. Attendants had access to dozens of colors of paint and acrylic pens to decorate their discs. Additionally, the event had a self-serve hot chocolate bar and relaxing music playing. SUBOG Concert Committee chair Kaitlyn Nigborowicz is happy that students were able to create their own dorm decor at the event.

“I think painting vinyls is really cool because it’s decorations that students get to take home with them and put up in their dorm” Nigborowicz, a seventh semester management and engineering for manufacturing major said.

She said the event sought to create a relaxing environment before finals begin.

“The goal with this event was to have something close to finals week, but not too close to finals week, we wanted to have a relaxing environment … to just come and do some arts and crafts and unwind,” Nigborowicz said.

The event was packed with students. Event staff helped groups of students find places to sit together, but at one point during the event they ran out of tables, so students began sitting on the floor.

“It seems laid back, pretty chill, so it’s a pretty good de-stressor from final exams coming up,” said Junior Lopez, a first-semester biology major who was painting the cover art from “The Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd on his disc.

Jerod Abraham, a student who was attending the event, painted his vinyl to look like Green Kirby.

“It’s a pretty nice, relaxing event, I’m enjoying it, it’s a good break from studying,” Abraham said.

Sally Picon, a third-semester marketing major and the vice chair of operations for the Concert Committee, also commented on the event.

“This event is presented by Concert Committee, that’s where we got the inspiration for the vinyls” Picon said. “We wanted to do some sort of hands-on relaxation event, and we thought: ‘wow vinyls are very musically related’ and that really fits with the goals of our committee.”

Angelica Whitney, a seventh-semester animal science major and vice chair of marketing for SUBOG’s Concert Committee, spoke about why she liked the event.

“I think that it’s a great opportunity to have more [events] than just us running concerts, and instead having other music-related events for students that are creative and want to enjoy a relaxing event,” Whitney said.

In addition to Brushing to the Beat, SUBOG will also be hosting other festive, relaxation-themed events this week. Today at 6 p.m. in Monteith 302, SUBOG will be hosting gingerbread house decorating to help students to get ready for a festive finals week.

Also, today from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union theater, SUBOG and Antojitos Colombianos LLC will be cohosting Noche Navideña & Dinner, a traditional Colombian celebration event including a show and dinner provided to the first 100 attendees afterwards.
