Brayden’s Breakdown: Four potential bowl games for UConn Football

The UConn Huskies still have another football game to play in the 2025 college season despite the coaching carousel of the past week. Head coach Jim Mora hopped on a plane to Colorado State, inking a five-year deal with the Rams to be their next head football coach. Offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis will assume head coaching duties on an interim basis for the Huskies bowl game.

Speaking of that bowl game, there have been rumblings about where it will take place, but nothing has been confirmed. Coming off a 9-win season capped off by a Fenway Bowl victory against North Carolina in 2024, UConn sits at 9-3 and seeks its first ever 10-win season as an FBS team.

Here are four potential bowl games that the Huskies could be playing in at the end of this month and some potential opponents.

Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl (New York City)

After the success of the Fenway Bowl in Boston, why not take it to the rival baseball field? New York is an easy trip for the New England based Husky fanbase. Connecticut has only played at Yankee Stadium once before, losing to Army 35-21 in front of 27,000 fans in 2014. The Pinstripe Bowl is usually ACC versus Big 10, but the Fenway Bowl made an exception for the independent Huskies last year, so the New York Yankees can too. A matchup against Penn State would bring fans from both coach-less teams to the Bronx. A UConn win would carry momentum into a new era of Husky football in 2026.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl (Charlotte)

Connecticut lost the Duke’s Mayo Bowl to Wake Forest in 2007 and it is about time that the Huskies get back to Charlotte. Playing a local team like NC State or Clemson would give the Huskies a chance to play in a high stakes road environment. A win against a third ACC team this season could bolster the case for UConn to join the conference.

Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa)

A tropical bowl game is also in play for the Huskies just three years after playing in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. UConn could head down to the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and enjoy the fruits of Florida before a big bowl game. The Gasparilla Bowl offers many opponents, including teams outside of the power 4 conferences. The loser of the North Texas versus Tulane AAC championship could be an interesting opponent. James Madison, who is coming to Hartford for a game in the 2026 season, could also be a good matchup if they fail to make the college football playoffs.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (Boise)

The Huskies heading out west would be an effective way to grow the building brand that is UConn football. A trip to Idaho to take on a Group of 5 teams would once again show that Connecticut is ready to take the next step. The bowl usually has ties to the Mountain West and the MAC. UConn could easily replace a MAC team and face a tough Mountain West team. Teams like San Diego State, UNLV and Hawaii could be a cool matchup for the Huskies. San Diego State and UNLV were in the Group of 5 playoff picture early in the college season and a UConn win could put them up with the best G5 teams.

The bowl games will be announced after the college football playoffs are revealed on Sunday, Dec. 7. Fans can tune in to ESPN to see where and when the Huskies’ next game is.
