UConn Women’s Tennis: UConn sweeps Marquette in Storrs

The Huskies swept Marquette 7-0 on Friday, March 27 in Storrs, Conn. With the win, the Huskies moved to 2-2 in Big East play and 8-6 overall.  

The first doubles match of the day featured UConn sophomore Chloe Lomans and junior Ela Platenikova. On Marquette’s side, senior Emma Davis and freshman Elise Barnstedt took the court. The first match ended 4-4. 

After the first match, UConn went on a roll as junior Victoria Matos and freshman Madison Mcleod beat Marquette’s Elena Duva and Maria Poon 6-0. 

UConn continued the momentum as junior Isabella Asenov and senior Cameron Didion beat sophomores Aiyana Abbot and Luciana Mendoza 6-1 to give UConn the lead after the doubles matches. 

Husky domination continued into singles play with Platenikova beating Barnstedt 6-4 in the first set and 6-2 in the second set. 

Platenikova’s doubles partner, Lomans, beat Davis 6-3 and 6-1 to take the win for UConn and continued their winning streak. 

Matos kept up her dominance from the doubles match as she beat Poon 6-0 and 6-1 for the Huskies third singles win on the day. 

Didion kept the momentum by beating Abbot by 6-0 in the first set and 6-1 in the second set to keep the Huskies undefeated on the day.

The final match was closer than the previous two, but Mcleod still came out on top, beating Mendoza 6-1 and 6-3 for UConn’s fifth singles win. 

Asenov wrapped it up with a 6-1 and 6-3 win over Duva, keeping UConn undefeated. 

The two teams’ previous matchup on March 15, 2025, saw UConn win 5-2. Olivia Wright and Matos plus Lomans and Asenov secured doubles wins. Wright, Isabel Petri-Bere, Didion and Lomans won four out of the six singles matches. 

Next up, UConn will face Georgetown on Thursday, April 2 and Villanova on Saturday, April 4. 

Historically, UConn has a 3-6 record against Georgetown, with matches dating back to 2009. The Huskies won their previous matchup against the Hoyas on Feb. 16, 2025. 

Connecticut has owned an 11-4 record against Villanova since April 11, 2009. The Wildcats are coming into this weekend on a two-game win streak beating, UConn 4-3 in the Big East Championships on April 19, 2025, and 4-3 on April 6, 2025.
