Women’s Tennis: Huskies fall to Georgetown, defeat Villanova

The UConn women’s tennis team fell to Georgetown on Thursday but beat Villanova on Saturday in their weekend series.

The Huskies played Georgetown in College Park, Md. on April 2 and lost 4-3 for their seventh loss to the Hoyas since 2009.

Sophomore Chloe Lomans and junior Ela Platenikova won the first doubles match of the day 6-3, but UConn couldn’t keep up the momentum

UConn would lose the final two doubles matches as Georgetown freshmen Julia Chu and Ruhika Bhat bested junior Victoria Matos and freshman Madison Mcleod 6-3 while juniors Emily Novikov and Katie Garofolo-Ro beat UConn junior Isabella Asenov and senior Cameron Didion 6-4.

The singles matches started out well for the Huskies after Platenikova beat Novikov in three sets and Lomans bested Chu in two sets.

Georgetown got back a set after Garofolo-Ro got the upper hand on Matos in two sets, but UConn would take the 3-1 singles advantage once Didion beat senior Ashley Kennedy in two sets.

That would give UConn a 3-2 overall advantage against Georgetown, but it wouldn’t last for long.

Mcleod would fall to Bhat in two sets to even the score 3-3 and in the final match of the day, Georgetown senior Paige Gilbert would best Asenov 6-1 and 6-0 to give Georgetown the win.

That puts UConn’s record at 3-7 against Georgetown all-time and 1-5 away from Storrs.

UConn would then traveled to Villanova, Pa. for their April 4 matchup against Villanova University.

Entering the matchup, UConn held an 11-4 record against Villanova since 2009 with their last two matchups both ending 4-3 in favor of the Wildcats.

In the opening doubles match, Lomans and Platenikova would best Wildcat seniors Emi Callahan and Maggie Gehrig 6-3.

UConn would complete the doubles sweep after the second match when Matos and Mcleod beat juniors Lauren Monti and Jenna Stevens 6-2 for the first point of the day.

Villanova would even the score 1-1 after Villanova sophomore Olivia Corcoran beat Platenikova but UConn would regain the one-point lead after Lomans took down Behrig 6-3 and 6-4.

Villanova would level the points again when junior Miriam Gondorova beat Matos in three sets but once again, UConn would take the lead when Didion best Stevens 6-0 and 6-2.

The penultimate singles match had Villanova freshman Alina Kornyeva beat Mcleod in three sets, leaving the final match of the day to decide the winner.

The deciding match was close, but Asenov took down Monti 7-5 and 7-5 to give the Huskies the win.

That moves the Huskies’ all-time record against the Wildcats to 12-4 and 6-1 away from Storrs.

The Huskies are set to play their final regular season match against the Seton Hall Pirates on April 8 before taking on the Big East Championships April 16 through April 19.
