UConn Women’s Tennis: Huskies defeat Seton Hall in final regular season match of the year

The UConn women’s tennis team defeated the Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday in a close matchup. 

The Huskies played the Pirates in Storrs and won 4-3, continuing their undefeated streak against Seton Hall with 14 wins and zero losses since March 27, 2009. 

Junior Ela Platenikova and sophomore Chloe Lomans opened up the doubles matches with a 6-2 win for UConn against junior Anastasia Sereda and freshman Kira Farrakhova. 

The Huskies kept the momentum going into the second doubles match, as junior Victoria Matos and freshman Madison Mcleod defended Seton Hall sophomores Rachel Benoualid and Isabelle May 6-4. 

The final doubles match wasn’t finished due to UConn winning the first two, but junior Isabella Asenov and senior Cameron Didion led Pirates’ sophomore Niamh Campbell and junior Jaden Davidson 5-3. 

The singles matches started out in Seton Halls’ favor as Farrakhova beat Platenikova in three sets to give Seton Hall its first point of the day. 

During the second match, Davidson won the first set but took the next two as UConn regained the lead 2-1.

Seton Hall again evened the scores 2-2 after Sereda bested Matos in two straight sets. 

After the fourth match, Didion gave UConn another point after defending Campbell 6-2 in both sets.

The penultimate match fell in the favor of the Pirates as Benoualid beat Mcleod 7-5 and 6-3 to bring the winner of the day down to the last match. 

For the final match, Asenov and May took three sets to decide the winner with May winning the first set and Asenov winning the second. The final set would be no contest for Asenov as she May 6-3 and took home the win for UConn. 

The UConn women’s tennis team final test of the season is the Big East Championship on April 16 through April 19.
