CT joins states suing RFK Jr. for declaration on gender-affirming care

Connecticut joined a lawsuit in December to challenge the federal government’s attempt to discredit and limit gender-affirming care. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a declaration on Dec. 18, 2025, claiming that gender-affirming care is “neither safe nor effective as a treatment modality for gender dysphoria, gender incongruence, or other related disorders in minors.” 

UConn hosts Climate Change Cafe today

The University of Connecticut Office of Sustainability will host a Climate Change Cafe from 4 to 6 p.m. in Student Union Room 304 today.

CT approved for grant to expand high-speed internet

Connecticut will receive $144 million from a federal program to bolster high-speed internet access across the state.

Insomnia Cookies opens new Stamford location

Insomnia Cookies celebrated the grand opening of a new location in Stamford, Conn. on Jan. 17. The new store, located in The One Atlantic, an apartment complex in Stamford, is near the University of Connecticut Stamford campus and Sacred Heart University. 

Avelo Airlines stops deportation flights with ICE 

Avelo Airlines, a New Haven-based airline and a marketing partner of the University of Connecticut, has announced that they will stop performing deportation flights for Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) and close the Mesa Gateway Airport in Phoenix, where the airline operated its deportation flights, on Jan. 27.

Connecticut sues to block new SNAP eligibility rules 

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong has joined 21 other state attorneys general to sue the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) over new “unlawful” Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) rules that would make certain immigrants ineligible for the program regardless of legal status, according to a Nov. 26 press release.

The University of Connecticut announced the merger of the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) and Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) into a new Office of Inclusion and Civil Rights last month. 

More off-campus housing coming to Storrs 

Another off-campus student housing development is underway on N. Eagleville Road, directly adjacent to the University of Connecticut Storrs campus.  The construction of housing totaling approximately 1,350 beds on two parcels of private land was approved by The Town of Mansfield Planning and Zoning Commission. The north side of the development (Site B) of N. Eagleville Road will begin later this year, and the south half (Site A) will be constructed in a future year, according to Jennifer Kaufman, director of Mansfield Planning and Development.

President Donald Trump signed a law approving federal funding through the fiscal year on Nov. 12, meaning residents who receive food aid benefits would be receiving their full benefits for the month of November, not the reduction that went into action at the start of the month.

Budget proposal would increase housing charge, freeze tuition 

A 2.75% increase to the lowest housing rate was proposed alongside a tuition freeze during a budget town hall for the 2026-27 academic year on Wednesday, Nov. 19.

The University of Connecticut will host two town hall meetings discussing the proposed tuition and fees for the 2026-27 academic year, according to an email sent to all undergraduate Storrs students on Nov. 11. 

SEEC dismisses 2024 election complaint 

The State Elections Enforcement Commission (SEEC) dismissed the 2024 election complaint, which claimed that Mansfield registered ineligible voters and allowed electioneering within 75 feet of a polling location. 

Neag professor wins Manchester BOE election 

When Alexandra Lamb and her husband started walking their dog, Bucatini, around Manchester, they were pleasantly surprised. “I didn’t realize how many other people in Manchester had a dog too, because we walked down the street and all of a sudden this whole world opened up to us — all of these people who have dogs, who became whole new friends,” she said. “It was Manchester I didn't know about.”
