CT Hall honors Rare Disease Day today 

The Connecticut Hall dining facility is raising awareness for Rare Disease Day today led by Gabby DiSalvo, a student employee with myofibrillar myopathy. 

Secretive Tolland detention center plans paused 

Plans for a juvenile detention center in Tolland were put on hold until further evaluations could take place, according to a press release from Connecticut General Assembly. Town officials in Tolland claimed that they were kept in the dark about the original plan to build the detention center, sparking concern and outrage.

Trump tariffs stalled by Supreme Court decision 

The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs were unconstitutional in a 6-3 decision.  Trump had imposed many of his tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which gives the president the power to regulate importation in states of emergency.

SUBOG’s Winter Week begins 

Students who are looking for fun events to celebrate the winter feeling are in luck! SUBOG’s Winter Week has begun, consisting of five free winter-themed events for students at the University of Connecticut to check out.

Local artifacts, art to be showcased in Coventry art installation. 

The David Hayes Sculpture Fields in Coventry will begin exhibiting local artifacts and works from historic Coventry artists as a part of the America 250 CT Commission, which aims to celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.

First Hindu prayer space opens on campus 

The first Hindu prayer space opened on the University of Connecticut Storrs campus this month.   An effort spearheaded by the Undergraduate Student Government and Hindu Student Organization (HSO), the space is a place students can sit in peace, meditate, pray and practice their faith on their own time.

UConn Skydiving wins second place in national championship

Two members of the University of Connecticut skydiving team placed second in a national collegiate championship in Arizona over winter break. With no prior competition experience, sixth-semester Alanna Ward and fourth-semester Kathryn Ausere competed in the two-way formation, where they performed a series of coordinated maneuvers, formations and freefall.

USG elections underway, intent to run form due Monday 

The Undergraduate Student Government is kicking off their election process for the 2026-2027 school year, with intent to run forms due Monday, Feb. 9. The open positions for the spring 2026 election include student body president and vice president, who must run as a joint ticket, as well as chief diversity officer and comptroller.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s (CPB) board of directors voted on Jan. 5 to dissolve the organization after 58 years of operation. 

What’s happening with SNAP benefits? Where UConn students can receive food aid

President Donald Trump signed a law approving federal funding through the fiscal year on Nov. 12, meaning residents who receive food aid benefits would be receiving their full benefits for the month of November, not the reduction that went into action at the start of the month.

Two more sheep died in barn fire than originally reported  

A fire at a livestock barn on the University of Connecticut Storrs campus killed six sheep instead of the four originally announced on Saturday, according to the university spokesperson.  

UConn emails ICE guidance to students, says no reports of ICE on campus  

The University of Connecticut advised students on handling Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in an email sent to students, faculty and staff on Thursday. The email said no reports or plans for ICE presence on campus have been made.

USG Elections Overview: Who’s running? 

The University of Connecticut Undergraduate Student Government (USG) elections are less than a week away. Students will be electing their new president and vice president, chief diversity officer and comptroller, as well as academic and multicultural and diversity senators. Voting opens on March 3 at noon and will close March 5 at noon on UConntact.

Nautical Bowls Storrs closing Friday 

Nautical Bowls Storrs, a smoothie bowl shop in Downtown Storrs, will be closing this Friday, according to an announcement from the store. Nautical Bowls Storrs, a franchise store run by a local Mansfield family, opened in early 2024. They serve “superfood” acai and pitaya bowls with a variety of fruit and granola toppings, and smoothies.

CT, other states sign agreement with Dept. of Ed for DEI funding 

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, along with 19 other state attorneys general, has come to an agreement with the federal government to stop them from withholding funds from schools with diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies.
