Connecticut’s legislative session opens 

Connecticut opened its 2026 legislative session yesterday. This year, the Connecticut General Assembly (CGA) has a short session, as it is an election year for legislators. The session will continue until midnight on May 6. 

Government enters partial shutdown over DHS funding 

The United States government partially shut down over the weekend due to Congress negotiating changes to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). 

Protesters call for nationwide shutdown today 

Activists across the country are calling for complete shutdown of work, school and shopping today to protest mass deportations and violence by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Local artifacts, art to be showcased in Coventry art installation. 

The David Hayes Sculpture Fields in Coventry will begin exhibiting local artifacts and works from historic Coventry artists as a part of the America 250 CT Commission, which aims to celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.

Insomnia Cookies opens new Stamford location

Insomnia Cookies celebrated the grand opening of a new location in Stamford, Conn. on Jan. 17. The new store, located in The One Atlantic, an apartment complex in Stamford, is near the University of Connecticut Stamford campus and Sacred Heart University. 

Avelo Airlines stops deportation flights with ICE 

Avelo Airlines, a New Haven-based airline and a marketing partner of the University of Connecticut, has announced that they will stop performing deportation flights for Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) and close the Mesa Gateway Airport in Phoenix, where the airline operated its deportation flights, on Jan. 27.

UConn Skydiving wins second place in national championship

Two members of the University of Connecticut skydiving team placed second in a national collegiate championship in Arizona over winter break. With no prior competition experience, sixth-semester Alanna Ward and fourth-semester Kathryn Ausere competed in the two-way formation, where they performed a series of coordinated maneuvers, formations and freefall.

USG elections underway, intent to run form due Monday 

The Undergraduate Student Government is kicking off their election process for the 2026-2027 school year, with intent to run forms due Monday, Feb. 9. The open positions for the spring 2026 election include student body president and vice president, who must run as a joint ticket, as well as chief diversity officer and comptroller.

Urban Lodge Brewery to replace Barnes and Noble in Downtown Storrs

Urban Lodge Brewery is planned to open in Downtown Storrs in fall 2026, replacing Barnes and Noble which closed at the end of last year.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s (CPB) board of directors voted on Jan. 5 to dissolve the organization after 58 years of operation. 

What’s happening with SNAP benefits? Where UConn students can receive food aid

President Donald Trump signed a law approving federal funding through the fiscal year on Nov. 12, meaning residents who receive food aid benefits would be receiving their full benefits for the month of November, not the reduction that went into action at the start of the month.

UConn-based project gets NSF grant to prepare for severe weather  

A project by the Connecticut Institute for Resilience and Climate Adaptation won a grant for over $250,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) after the Trump administration disrupted the award process, according to the project’s principal investigator.  

Two journalists face charges by Trump admin for anti-ICE protest coverage 

Two independent journalists were released from federal custody on Friday after being arrested by the Trump administration for covering an anti-ICE protest at a church in Minnesota on Jan. 18, according to NPR.  

New Milford battery farm paused after local opposition

Developer Flatiron Energy announced a pause on the construction of a New Milford battery farm during a Jan. 22 meeting opposing the project, according to a Zoom by New Milford Clean Water Coalition. The announcement came in the last couple of minutes of the Zoom meeting. Before that, Kate Losey, a presenter with the coalition, said there was a lot of hope when a concerned resident asked about the possibility to “quash” the battery farm.

Mansfield joins CMDA, prioritizing family housing

The town of Mansfield is one of the newest members of the Connecticut Municipal Development Authority, according to town council meeting minutes. CMDA is a “statewide quasi-public organization that works with towns and cities to increase housing production in neighborhoods that are mixed-use, walkable, and well-served by transit,” according to its website. The organization currently works with 39 municipalities across the state.

Spring Involvement Fair today in Gampel! 

The University of Connecticut’s Spring Involvement Fair is happening today in Gampel Pavilion from 1 to 6 p.m. according to the Department of Student Activities. The fair is free of cost and will feature 370 different registered student organizations, according to Sarah Bernhardt, the coordinator for Student Organization Support and Leadership and event coordinator for the fair.

Square Peg selling alcohol again after 3-day suspension, fine

Square Peg Pizzeria’s Storrs location has been fined by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection’s Liquor Control Division for various violations, including selling alcohol to a minor.
