Internet outages across the campus affected thousands of students and faculty on the first day of classes Monday morning.

Many students tried to connect to UCONN-SECURE, the university’s SSID network, as well as UCONN-GUEST, the public network, but were not able to do so.

Two controllers on the main campus, which manage the wireless access points that students and faculty use to connect to the Internet, stopped “reliably allowing access” on Monday, university spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said in an emailed statement.

Technicians working on the system declared the situation “resolved” via the IT System Status website at 1:30 p.m. after restarting both of the controllers.

However, students continued to report spotty access into the late afternoon and evening hours.

Reitz said the campus network is experiencing a “normal semester load,” meaning the outage was not caused by students overextending the network’s capabilities.

The university reported the issue to the wireless hardware vendor, Reitz said.

In addition, the university experienced a server outage last Thursday, according to information provided to Reitz by UConn Information Technology Services (UITS).

An “internal system problem” that blocked access to student information lasted through a “portion of the morning,” Reitz said.

The error was resolved before noon, Reitz said, and no further widespread failure has been reported.
