In her time playing for UConn field hockey, Charlotte Veitner has either broke, or is soon to break, almost every record in the program’s history. The best part? She’s only a junior.
The Dusseldorf, Germany, native tallied two goals and four assists between two games this weekend. Veitner tied the all-time assists record with her performance on Sunday, needing just one more to break the record held by Lizzy Pejis.
With her eight points this weekend, Veitner is nine points shy of Lauren Henderson for the all-time points record of 214; she overtook second place from former Olympian Tracey Fuchs at 178 points on September 26.
She set the single game scoring record with six goals in a game against Virginia earlier this season. Veitner is also the single season record holder in points (99) and goals (39) for her performance in 2015.
Not to mention, she’s been on the SportsCenter Top 10.
“Charlotte has many gifts. She’s a brilliant scorer. She has a great engine, always working hard,” head coach Nancy Stevens said. “She’s one of the top strikers in the country so obviously we’re really happy she’s here. The good part is she’s only a junior, so she’s going to continue to improve.”
That’s a dangerous thought for every other field hockey program in the country.
In her freshman year, Veitner finished with 48 points. She set the school record in her sophomore campaign with 99, and this season she’s currently sitting at 57 points with four regular season games remaining and the possibility of up to six extra games in the postseason.
“I think Charlotte would be the person to say that her teammates set her up. All the hard work is done before she gets the ball, but fortunately she has the ability to finish,” Stevens said. “The goals and the assists get all the accolades but she knows it’s a complete team effort.”
