Patrons of the UConn library café were evacuated from the café and its surrounding study area due to an unpleasant smell caused by a wire shortage early Sunday evening.
Bookworm’s Café is located on the plaza level of Homer Babbidge Library and features a 24-hour study area, according to the UConn Dining Service’s website.
“It’s a wire shortage. (UConn electricians) are replacing it now,” Bookworm’s Café location supervisor Gerry Derosier said at about 5 p.m. soon after evacuation.
According to Derosier, the wire shortage and ensuing unpleasant smell first occurred at about 4:15 or 4:30 p.m. on Sunday early evening.
“We immediately called UConn’s electricians,” Derosier said. “People were evacuated because of the smell.”
Bookworm’s Café reopened to patrons at about 5:10 p.m. on Sunday.
At about 5:25 p.m., a garbage can and caution tape still blocked one exterior entrance to Bookworm’s Café.
