The UConn women’s soccer team (0-2-1) will be working for their first win this weekend. The Huskies are heading to New Britain to play a tournament hosted by Central Connecticut State University. The tournament features Harvard and St. John’s as well as the Huskies and Blue Devils.

They open things up on Friday at 4:30 against one-time Big East foe St. John’s (2-0-1). This the pairs 22nd meeting, UConn holds a decisive 16-5-1 edge, but first since 2014.

So far this season the Red Storm tied La Salle 3-3 in their season opener and have subsequently defeated Marist 2-1 and Fairfield 2-0.

Junior Christina Bellero leads the attack offensively, with three goals and an assist on the season. No one else has more than one goal and/or assist.

In net, they have used two goalies, with freshman Antonia Tammaro starting their most recent game and shutting out Fairfield, while redshirt freshman Jordan Kamp started the previous two.

Regardless of their result against St. John’s, UConn will return on Sunday to face Central Connecticut (2-1) in a 6:00 pm game. The Blue Devils are facing Harvard in their Friday evening game.

So far, playing a hyper-local schedule, CCSU beat UMass 3-0, URI 1-0, and lost to Providence 1-0. Freshman midfielder Jenna Rae Covello has paced their scoring with two goals to this point. The Blue Devils have also played two goalies this season, with junior Ashley Cavanuagh recording the shutout in the first two games while Rachael DeBellis manned the net in their defeat to the Friars.

The Huskies defeated CCSU 2-1 last season in Storrs.

That was last year, when the UConn still had standouts Stephanie Ribeiro and Rachel Hill up top. Replacing them has been challenging and so far the team has scored one goal, produced by Zoe Steck.

This weekend will go a long way in shaping the outlook on the rest of the season for this group.
