The UConn men’s soccer team lost a heartbreaker on the road to Boston College 3-2 in double-overtime Tuesday night.
Heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation time the Huskies possessed a 2-0 lead. In the 80th minute the Eagles pulled ahead with a goal by Simon Enstrom. BC continued to pour on the pressure before Josh Forbes ultimately tied the game in the 90th minute. The Eagles almost ended the match in regulation, as they had one more opportunity at the end of stoppage time, but redshirt senior Scott Levene was able to force the match into overtime.
In overtime, BC continued to create chances, and in the second period of OT, finally beat Levene, who had six saves on the day.
Freshman Nicolas Apostol got the start for the Huskies, replacing the injured redshirt sophomore N’Kosi Burgess. Burgess has been a staple in the UConn backline all season with junior captain Jacob Hauser-Ramsey in the heart of the Huskies’ defense.
The Huskies took an early lead as junior captain Abdou Mbacke Thiam scored off a pass from Apostol. The goal was Thiam’s team-leading ninth score of the season. Despite being outshot in the first-half, UConn was able to carry their lead into the half.
In the 78th minute, freshman Austin DaSilva doubled the Huskies’ lead with his second goal of the season. The Huskies entered the end of the match with what is commonly known as the worst lead in soccer; 2-0. As mentioned before, the Huskies crumbled in the final 10 minutes and lost on a sudden death goal in double OT.
The loss ends the great run of form for the Huskies. They had just broken back into the Top Drawer Soccer Rankings for the first time since the start of the season, following their stellar start to conference play.
This is not the first time the Huskies have blown a lead this season. UConn surrendered winning results in matches against North Florida and Georgetown earlier this season.
Last night’s match concludes a three-game road stretch for the Huskies, who will return home Saturday to take on American rival Central Florida.
