It’s that time of year again, the last couple of weeks before “Hallo-weekend” rolls around, when hordes of college students flood the internet with searches for “Cheap, easy, funny, etc. Halloween costumes.” If you are one of the aforementioned students looking for a costume, you could become an insurance commercial, Guy Fieri, or a play on words of “Dunkin’ Donuts.” If you’re looking for some tips on how to decorate your dorm to make sure it looks as festive as you do, you’ve come to the right place.
One simple yet creative group costume to try this year is to transform into your favorite insurance commercial. To become “Flo from Progressive”, print “Progressive” in blue on any white apron and add a button that says “I (heart) Insurance” and a nametag that says “Flo.” Don’t forget to dress in all white and throw on her signature blue headband.
If you want to be a “Farmers Insurance agent”, simply dress as a farmer in a flannel, overalls, boots and a cowboy hat. Bonus points if you chant “We are farmers, bum ba dum bum bum bum bum” to anyone who asks if you’re a cowboy/girl.
Then there’s the classic “Jake from State Farm”. All you need are “uh… khakis” and a red polo shirt. Complete the look with a State Farm nametag reading “Jake.”
If you have more than three members to your group, try doubling up on costumes or coming up with your own spin on the “Geico lizard,” “Mayhem” from Allstate or any other classic insurance commercial figure.
If you’re looking for a funny solo costume, the Mayor of Flavortown is your guy (and also happens to be named Guy). A Guy Fieri costume would consist of gelling short blonde hair into those signature spikes (a short blonde wig can be used to create this look), drawing on a mustache and goatee combo and adding some shades. In terms of an outfit, any button-up shirt, preferably with flames, and some cargo shorts will do.
Another group or individual costume idea is “Dunkin Donuts.” Just wear any basketball jersey and carry an inflatable donut floatie around your waist. Feel free to add sweatbands, basketballs or any other sporty accessories to make this look.
To instantly get your dorm room into the Halloween spirit, stop by the Price Chopper in Storrs Center to pick up some mini pumpkins. For some more permanent pumpkin decorations, wrap empty mason jars in orange tissue paper and cut out faces in black construction paper to glue on. Add a battery-operated tea candle to each jar and turn off the lights to watch them glow.
Turn your dorm door into a mummy by taping white streamers horizontally across your entire door. Cut out some eyes from black and white construction paper.
