University of Connecticut Transportation recently began a shuttle service that will bring men’s and women’s basketball fans from Storrs Center to Gampel Pavilion for the teams’ home games this season, according to a UConn Today article.
In addition to the “Gameday Shuttle” from Storrs Center to Gampel Pavilion, a shuttle will run from F-Lot to the Werth Family UConn Basketball Champions Center, according to the article. The article said the Gameday Shuttle will begin running to Gampel 90 minutes before games and start running back to Storrs Center 90 minutes after games end.
The shuttle service will facilitate the process of arriving to games on campus and allow fans to buy dinner on or around campus after a game, Charles Grab of UConn Transportation said.
Fans can park in the Storrs Center garage for $1 an hour with the first two hours being free, according to the article.
The idea for a shuttle service began last summer, Grab said.
Grab said that service was created to decrease congestion on campus during gamedays.
“The idea for the free shuttles came about through meetings with our partners at (UConn) Athletics,” Grab said. “We had been looking for ways to alleviate congestion around Gampel Pavilion.”
Fifth-semester finance major Jessica Nguyen said she believes the shuttle service will decrease heavy traffic on game days.
“The cost of parking at south garage is sometimes $12 just to park near Gampel during basketball games, which is kind of ridiculous,” Nguyen said.
Grabs said he thinks the shuttle service will make games more enjoyable for fans.
“Our hope is for fans to find making the trip into campus for games a little less burdensome,” Grab said. “Nobody enjoys sitting in traffic.”
Third-semester physiology and neurobiology major Shyam Patel said he feels the shuttle service will make going to games easier.
“The only problem would be space on the bus and how many (people) would be able to make use of the shuttle,” Patel said.
Grab said he hopes the program will continue to expand in the future.
“We’ve received very positive feedback from riders in these first few weeks,” Grab said.
