At the beginning of the 1974 spring semester, students said they faced troubles when they picked up textbooks from the Follette-run bookstore.

Students voiced concerns about overpriced books and long lines. The manager stated that book prices come from the book publishers but inflation was also a factor.

Students also expressed concerns about crowds. In response, the bookstore implemented a multi-line system, a line for checks and a line for cash.

Additionally, the bookstore was crowded because students could not buy books the week before the semester started, as the university was completely shut down in an effort to conserve energy.
