On Friday night, the Student Union Board of Governors (SUBOG) featured Nikki Glaser as the highlight of their Winter Weekend activities.
Glaser began stand-up comedy at the age of 18 and since has performed on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Conan” and two seasons of “The Last Comic Standing.” She is also is a stand-up comedian, podcast host and television show host. Throughout these various platforms, she is known for her sex-driven sets.
However, Glaser refuted the basis of her notoriety during her performance Friday night saying that she was not an expert at all. Then, she launched into a series of partially self-deprecating jokes about her sexual history and preferences.
Despite the common content of jokes about rape, porn and sexual fantasies, many audience members felt that Glaser’s humor was an original take on those topics.
Jack Dillon, fourth-semester acting major noted this trend. “Everything seemed, like, of course it would be new material, but it seemed, like, so familiar yet new that it made so much sense with today’s world and it was really relatable,” Dillon said.
Alexandra Brokowski, sixth semester acting major agreed with Dillon. “Her performance was great, like, it sounded as if I was talking to a friend who was way funnier than me and has more experience at, uh, anal,” Brokowski said.
Embracing her fun-aunt vibe, Glaser never shied away from the raunchy and explicit humor she’s known for.
“I like that she didn’t speak down to us as college students. I hate it when comedians come here and they feel like they have to clean it up. That’s kind of nasty,” said fourth-semester acting major Matthew Antoci.
Antoci, Brokowski and Dillon all particularly enjoyed Glaser’s joke in which she yelled, “Suck the clit!” “That was hilarious,” Antoci said.
Glaser’s humor, some would argue, is not just for entertainment, but more subtly sheds light on serious topics including sexual harassment, abuse and gender roles.
Sonu Teepireddy, a sixth-semester physiology and neurobiology major, enjoyed Glaser’s comedic interpretation of social issues. “She hit a lot of social conflicts, but in a funny way so she brought light to a lot of things that society should be talking about,” Teepireddy said. “I thought it was pretty cool that she could touch on all of these things in a very comical aspect, but you get the point that rape is a big issue and porn is, like, getting really bad.”
Overall, many would welcome Glasser back any Friday night when they are in need of a good laugh.
