Jim Calhoun Way will become a temporary one-way lane, only allowing westbound traffic from Hillside Road starting on Friday, Feb. 9, according to UConn Today.
The road will only allow one-way access to Gampel Service Drive behind Gampel Pavilion, according to UConn Today. Service to the South Parking Garage, I-Lot and Separatist Road will remain two-way.
The changes will remain in place until the end of the spring 2018 semester, according to UConn Today, and may be reinstituted for the fall 2018 semester.
With the road being one-way, pedestrian and motor traffic will be reduced, said UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz.
“UConn Police and other departments on campus regularly discuss areas on campus that may be posing problems for traffic and pedestrians, and this was one such spot that needed to be addressed,” Reitz said. “Since traffic won’t be approaching the intersection from eastbound Jim Calhoun Way, that’s one less area where cars and pedestrians would be trying to use the road at the same time. It’s a very busy area, so anything that makes it safer is a benefit for drivers and for people walking near and across those roads.”
The road will continue being blocked off during games held in Gampel, Reitz said.
