Whether or not you have plans for Valentine’s Day tomorrow, you can get a little bit of celebrating in today with the Galentine’s Day. Galentine’s Day takes place every Feb. 13, one day before Valentine’s Day, and is arguably much better than its romantic counterpart. Galentine’s Day is a day to celebrate all the lovely women in your life, so grab your best girlfriends and get the waffles ready—because it’s Galentine’s Day.
Galentine’s Day was created on the NBC show “Parks and Recreation,” which ran a respectable seven season run from 2009 to 2015. In the 16th episode of the second season, Leslie Knope and her friends gather for brunch in celebration of Galentine’s Day. In the episode, Leslie hands everyone a homemade present before sharing with the audience the meaning of Galentine’s Day. “What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every Feb. 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it, breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”
I feel like we could all learn a thing or two from Leslie Knope. There is nothing better than gathering all of your best lady friends and celebrating your friendship and each other. Especially with Valentine’s Day just over the horizon, it can be easy to lose sight of the important ladies in your life. The fact that you get to enjoy some waffles on top of that is just a delicious bonus.
If you are hoping to plan a last minute Galentine’s Day brunch with all of your best friends, but aren’t exactly sure what you should be doing, this article has you covered. The first step in pulling off a delightful Galentine’s day is to start with your guest list. Invite all of your best lady friends who you want to celebrate and show your appreciation for.
After you figure out who you want to come, get some paws on some breakfast foods. There are not a whole lot of brunch restaurants here in Storrs, so make sure that your dorm/apartment/dining hall table is stocked with breakfast essentials like frittatas and waffles.
Instead of spending money on expensive gifts, try and exchange sentimental presents like a letter detailing how you feel about each of your friends or homemade artwork. Even if you are not a particularly good artist, don’t worry, it’s the thought that counts.
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it can be easy to lose sight of all the wonderful ladies in your life. Sure, Galentine’s Day may seem cheesy, but there is nothing wrong with embracing a little bit of friendship and love every once in a while. Take today to embrace Leslie Knope’s mantra of “Ladies celebrating ladies,” by having a fantastic Galentine’s Day brunch with all of your favorite ladies. Just don’t forget to leave your significant other at home.
