The UConn lacrosse team (1-1) narrowly beat Fairfield on Wednesday, 13-12, in their home opener.
The win was UConn head coach Katie Woods’ 100th career win. Although she did not go into the game knowing the statistic after the game she did say that, “it was pretty cool to reach that milestone.”
The lead scorer of the game for UConn was senior midfielder Kelsey Catalano. Catalano scored three goals in the game.
The biggest success story of the game for UConn however, was freshman midfielder Sydney Watson. Watson was named the first Big East freshman of the week this past week after her stellar performance in UConn’s loss to Syracuse. In Wednesday’s game, Watson scored two goals and two assists.
The game against Fairfield was very back and forth with players showing fight until the last buzzer.
UConn scored first in the first half but then Fairfield went on a little run to make the score 5-2. UConn was able to crawl back and go into halftime only down by one.
In the second half the score ping-ponged back and forth some more. In the end, UConn was able to pull out the win.
After the game head coach Katie Woods said that her team showed a lot of resilience but that it wasn’t their best performance.
“I think we showed a lot of resilience…,” Woods said. “I can’t say that we really brought our best fight or our best energy. I think we were up and down based on what was going on in the game. We need to focus on what we can control and keep it high energy all the time and [be] a little bit better connected. I think we were able to kind of put it together at the end. But I would say from top to bottom we didn’t collectively play our best game for sure.”
