Graduate Student Trustee candidate Glenn Holmes said he hopes to fight against additional state budget cuts to the University of Connecticut if elected to the Board of Trustees.

Holmes, an American University (AU) graduate and first-year J.D. student at UConn Law School, said he doesn’t think the Connecticut General Assembly is cognizant of the damage additional budget cuts could do to the university.

“I’m running because I came back from serving in AmeriCorps to go to law school here and realized how bad things are for UConn, how tough the dilemma is going forward,” Holmes said. “I’m really worried about what the next ten years of potential budget cuts could do to the idea of UConn and the value of our degrees and I don’t think the message has been sent clearly about how these cuts could hurt us.”

Holmes received a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from AU, where he served as a senator in its student government and a columnist at its newspaper, as well as the president of his fraternity.

Holmes said his temperament and leadership style make him well-suited for the position of Graduate Student Trustee.

“I’m the kind of person who recognizes that I’m not going to be successful if it’s just me up there waving my arms,” Holmes said. “I think recognizing that the power comes from the people is the reason why I would be the best person for (the job).”

As Graduate Student Trustee, Holmes said he hopes to be “the voice of the students” and stress how valuable it is to support UConn.

“We’re tomorrow’s doctors, lawyers, social workers, teachers, engineers and businessmen – you need us,” Holmes said.
