Women’s Lacrosse: Huskies topple Great Danes

The UConn women’s lacrosse team defeated UAlbany 15-11 on Wednesday behind five goals from junior Caitlin Leary.

Despite the fact that the match time and venue were changed due to an impending snowstorm, UConn was still able to get the win and improve to a winning record. UConn’s record now stands at 4-3. The Huskies have won two straight road games.

In the match against the Great Danes (0-5), UConn secured a season-high 18 draw controls. In addition, the Huskies never trailed.

Before the end of the first half, Leary scored three goals in 49 seconds. Two of those goals were assisted by senior Grace Nolan. Nolan scored two goals of her own in the game.

By halftime the Huskies were up by three goals.

In the second half, UConn led by as many as six goals after they went on an 8-2 run.

Late in the second half, UAlbany went on a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to four but it was not enough to shake the Huskies.

Senior Kelsey Catalano and sophomore Olivia Miles both scored hat tricks in the game in addition to Leary’s five goals. So far on the season Leary is second on the team in goals with 19. Nolan leads the pack with 23.

Junior Lexi Kenneally and freshman Sydney Watson each added a goal of their own in the second half. Watson is having an impressive freshman season starting off with being named the Big East lacrosse freshman of the week after her first game. So far this season, Watson has scored 16 points off of 10 goals and six assists.

UConn caused eight turnovers in the game and held the Great Danes to under 60 percent in clear attempts.

The Huskies will continue their away stint at Ohio State next Wednesday, March 14 at 7 p.m.
