The Hartford Times predicted in March 1973 that then-University of Connecticut President Homer D. Babbidge would win the 1974 Connecticut gubernatorial election if it took place that month, based on a poll the Hartford Times completed at the time.
The Hartford Times’ poll predicted Babbidge would beat then-Connecticut Gov. Thomas J. Meskill, as well as Robert F. Killian, the Connecticut Attorney General at the time, by a small margin.
In the poll, Babbidge won 40 percent of the vote against Meskill, including both liberal and middle-of-the-road voters. Babbidge also won the metropolitan Hartford area and the rest of the state’s vote in the poll.
Democrats and Independents supported Babbidge in the poll, while Meskill gained the Republican vote.
