The UConn lacrosse team (5-5 overall, 1-1 Big East) will head to Florida on Saturday to take on the No. 8 Gators in Gainesville.
Florida is 7-3 overall on the season thus far and 2-0 in the Big East.
The last time the Huskies faced off with Florida was March 18 of last season. UConn lost that game 20-10 in Storrs.
One player to watch on Florida is freshman Shannon Kavanagh. Kavanagh was named the Big East Midfielder of the Week on Tuesday . The honor was Kavanagh’s first of her career.
Kavanagh had a career-best outing against No. 24 Georgetown, where she scored six points off of three goals and three assists. She helped lead her team in a come-from-behind win against Georgetown and assisted on the game-tying goal.
Currently, Kavanagh is tied for third among all Gators with 24 points and is third on the team with 30 draw controls.
Another player to watch for Florida is senior Shayna Pirreca. Pirreca was named to the All Big East Second Team and the Tewaaraton Award Watch List last season. So far this season, Pirreca has 31 goals and 10 assists.
The Gators are coached by Amanda O’Leary who recently reached her 300th career victory with a 16-11 win against Georgetown. She is the fifth coach in the history of Division 1 women’s lacrosse to accomplish that feat.
“Mandee has one of the best lacrosse minds that I have been around in my time as a player and coach,” remarked lead assistant coach Taryn VanThof in an article posted to the team’s website. “Each day she (O’Leary) makes an investment to better those around her; whether it’s players, staff or even herself. It’s inspiring.”
The Huskies will take on Florida at 12 p.m. in Gainesville.
