A new fire pit available for student organizations and university departments to reserve is the latest addition to the Student Union at the University of Connecticut.
“We felt that the (north end of the Union outside the doors by the theatre) was such a great space that was never used,” Student Union Director Monica Rudzik said. “We made some safety modifications to it, cleaned it up and purchased the furniture and fire pit.”
The Union is also working with UConn Facilities to add lights and outlets to the space, Rudzik said.
Students do not need to pay to use the space if there will not be flames in the fire pit, but if they want a fire, a fee is required to cover the cost of gas and staff, Rudzik said.
“The UConn Fire Department won’t allow groups to use the fire without supervision,” Rudzik said. “The flat fee is $50 for two hours. Groups can bring their own supplies for s’mores, but no other food can be cooked beyond that.”
