The University of Connecticut College Republicans will spend this semester campaigning for the upcoming midterm elections and spreading the message of the Connecticut Republican party.
The College Republicans will be endorsing Republican candidate for governor Bob Stefanowski, according to club president Sean Chilson. The club believes the five-step plan Stefanowski developed with economist Art Laffer will provide economic incentives for companies to invest in Connecticut, Chilson said.
That five-step plan consists of phasing out corporate income tax and business entity tax over two years, phasing out state income tax over eight years, eliminating gift and estate taxes immediately, embracing zero-based budgeting to reduce spending and enacting a taxpayer bill of rights, according to Stefanowski’s official campaign website.
“Connecticut’s economy is being stymied by excessive regulations and massive debt [and] Hartford’s inefficient spending is only making matters worse,” Chilson said. “With Mr. Stefanowksi’s leadership, Connecticut will restore its competitive advantage amongst the northeast while also lowering the immense tax burden on Connecticut households.”
The College Republicans have been in touch with multiple groups to assist with campaigning for Stefanowski and for other Republican candidates, Chilson said.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get on-the-ground experience in campaigning and we hope to extend that opportunity to any of our motivated peers who are not yet involved with College Republicans,” Chilson said.
Outside of canvassing, Chilson said his goal for the College Republicans this semester is to “spread the message of the Connecticut Republican Party.”
“November’s elections will be a pivotal moment in deciding the future of our state,” Chilson said. “Connecticut needs passionate Republican leaders who will put the state back on track for the prosperity we once enjoyed.”
To get involved with the College Republicans, Chilson said students can email uconnrepublicans@gmail.com and follow the club on twitter @UConnCRs.
