University of Connecticut students had mixed reactions to the new bus route changes that were implemented earlier this week.
Transportation Services had originally altered the routes over the summer, eliminating many core campus routes and changing the routes for multiple lines. After receiving backlash from the student body, Transportation Services changed the lines once again based on student feedback.
Ian Krasnow, a materials science and engineering major, said that he had both positive and negative feelings about the new changes to the Yellow Line, which now services Horsebarn Hill, W Lot and the north side of campus.
Krasnow said that he uses the yellow line from W Lot and gets off at his stop, which is near intersection of North Eagleville Road and Storrs Road, but he still walks around 10 minutes to get to where he needs to go. Krasnow added that he only uses the bus line when it’s raining and he prefers to ride his bike to campus.
“It comes more frequently to the W Lot, but no because it doesn’t take me all the way to the center of campus,” Krasnow said.
Bryne Sidney, a speech, language and hearing sciences major, said she uses the Blue Line every day, but said she didn’t find the route to be any different.
“They didn’t change it at all,” Sidney said.
Sidney said that while the bus does get her to places on time, she believes that all the new bus routes still need improvements. Sidney added that while she has a car and can drive to the stores, the bus routes didn’t take into account students don’t have car access and who don’t live near or on the bus route.
“I’m annoyed that nothing goes to South Campus or Storrs Center,” Sidney said. “Some students don’t have cars and they have to rely on other people to get to the grocery store.”
Nursing major Olivia Pavuk said that while she does like the new bus routes, she wanted more bus lines to go through the center of campus like the pre-summer routes.
“I think they could do better. I think they need to go more into campus near the recreation center and the union,” Pavuk said.
Spencer Pilarski, an environmental studies major, said that he liked the new routes but admitted that they weren’t really different from the bus routes that the university had implemented at the beginning of the semester.
“I like them. They’re fine,” Pilarski said. “I think they’re about the same. There’s no real change.”
