The UConn women’s hockey team snapped its two-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon by beating the Union Dutchwomen 7-0.
While everyone in Storrs was riding out a rainstorm, the women’s hockey team was at the Messa Rink in Schenectady, New York, playing arguably their best game of the season.
“We are happy to get the win,” head coach Chris MacKenzie said. “It was good to be able to get scoring from a few different lines.”
The Huskies (5-3-1, 2-2-1 Hockey East) got out to a red-hot start, scoring five goals in the first period. They would add two more insurance goals in the second period to move the total to seven on the day, tying their season high.
Sophomore forward Savannah Bouzide scored almost half of those goals herself. She recorded her first career hat trick in the win. Junior forward Catherine Crawley added two goals herself. Senior forward Nora Maclaine and freshman forward Danika Pasqua rounded out the scoring for UConn with one goal each.
Junior goalkeeper Morgan Fisher had a big day in net. She recorded 20 saves and led the Huskies to their first shutout of the season.
Sophomore defender Taylor Wabick, sophomore forward Natalie Snodgrass, and freshman forward Viki Harkness all contributed to the win as well, tallying two assists each. Snodgrass now leads the team with nine assists and 11 points.
Bouzide’s three goals brought her to five on the young season, good for second on the team behind sophomore forward Morgan Wabick, who leads the team with six. Wabick also recorded an assist on Saturday.
The Huskies took 30 shots on goal, compared to only 20 taken by Union.
The Dutchwomen used three different goalies to get through the game and only the final one, Kate Spooner, was able to contain the Huskies.
UConn killed off all three of Union’s power play opportunities and were unsuccessful in their lone power play chance.
The win moved the Huskies to 5-3-1 on the year. They will continue their road trip with a Hockey East matchup at Boston College next Thursday at 7 p.m.
