In November 1956, the University of Connecticut Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) acquired a L-17 plane, a single-engine four-seat aircraft, to give orientation flights to cadets.
The plane was shared between UConn and Trinity College and based at Brainard Airport in Hartford.
When UConn’s ROTC was using it, the plane flew in and out of Windham Airport in Willimantic.
According to Major Lynn, the plane was intended for only orientation purposes and not flight instruction.
“The real purpose is cadet motivation,” Lynn said.
The university currently offers an Aviation Ground School program (AIRF3500), which meets all requirements for the FAA private pilot written exam.
