Applications for the Asian American Cultural Center Endowment Fund, a scholarship awarded to students who demonstrate involvement in an Asian American initiative at the University of Connecticut, are due March 29, 2019.

Applications can be found at the Asian American Cultural Center in the Student Union or online on their website.

“UConn alumni, Victoria Slate (‘07) and her sister Rebecca (‘11) are half Japanese and were very involved with the cultural center in their time at UConn,” Sheila Kucko, assistant director at AsACC, said.

The endowment originated as a gift from the Slate family back in 2012, the $25,000 donation has funded both scholarships for about 12 students since 2012 and program support for the cultural center, Kucko said.

“Students will apply and we will go through the applications and if they’ve been very active with the center, as the girls were, then the scholarship committee will decide and they can get up to $1000 for up to four years while at UConn” Kucko said.

For scholarship consideration, students should be involved in one of the many programs AsACC has to offer, or in an Asian American Institute for Research project or community cause in the state of Connecticut, Kucko said.

“We have AMP, our mentoring program for UConn freshmen; KUBE, our youth mentoring program; PAC, our Pan Asian Council; China Care, a national program which teaches Asian children Chinese culture; Salaam, which is a group that fights Islamophobia; and MIXED, a group for students of mixed ethnicities,” Kucko said.

In all applications, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, a personal essay and a current resume are required to be submitted, along with the completed application to the Asian American Cultural Center.

“After all applications are submitted, the committee will get together and make decisions over the course of about two weeks,” Kucko said. “We will make announcements on our scholarship winners at our senior banquet at the end of April.”
