Former University of Connecticut Fire Department Lieutenant Heidi Vaughan died over the weekend after battling cancer.

“She faced not one, but two battles with breast cancer with fierceness and courage well beyond her 41 years,” UConn Fire Chief William Perez said in a statement posted to the UConn Public Safety Facebook page Monday.

Vaughan joined UCFD in March 2004 and was promoted to lieutenant in January 2010, a Jan. 3 Public Safety Facebook post commemorating her retirement said. She also served as Deputy Fire Marshall and as a company officer.

“Heidi was the face of the department for many years through her hard work in the Fire Marshal’s Unit at public education events and through her work with the UConn Police Department teaching RAD classes to students and faculty,” Perez’s statement said.

Information on services for Vaughan’s death have not yet been released.
