Junior goaltender Adam Huska has signed an entry-level contract with the New York Rangers, forgoing his senior season.
Huska, a 21-year-old from Zvolen, Slovakia, was drafted by the Rangers in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL entry draft. He spent three seasons with the Huskies and played in 69 games, averaging a 2.90 goals against average and .908 save percentage. He finished his collegiate career with a 20-38-8 record.
After a career year his sophomore season where he averaged 2.59 goals against and a .912 save percentage in 27 games, Huska regressed in his junior year. He eventually lost the starting job to freshman Tomas Vomacka and finished the year with a 3.34 goals against average and a .896 save percentage. In his final game for UConn, Huska gave up five goals in the Huskies’ 5-2 loss to the No.8 Providence Friars.
Some of his shining moments for the Huskies include making 47 saves in a 4-2 victory over No.6 Notre Dame and recording 37 saves against No.5 Boston University for his first career shutout, both in his freshman year.
The signing came less than 12 hours after the Huskies’ last game of the season, with the Rangers announcing it on Twitter at 6:22 a.m.
“I came to UConn because I believed it was the best way for me and I wanted to go to school because school is important for me in my life,” Huska said. “Also, I kinda took it like a challenge, because UConn wasn’t really a hockey school, and I wanted to come here and make it a hockey school—to build the program and be a part of it.”
Now, Huska joins a talented and somewhat crowded group of goaltenders in the Rangers system, as he will have to try to separate himself from the pack.
