The Huskies Track and Field teams were back in Florida this weekend for the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida. With the spring outdoors season just beginning, the team didn’t use their entire roster, and only bringing a select few to compete.
The event was not scored on team performance, but individuals such as the UConn player went to better their personal times and continue preparing for the more meaningful events later in the season.
On Thursday, the first day of the three day event, Senior Kyle Brackman who has been outstanding for UConn all season showed out coming in second out of 42 runners in the 5,000 meter race with a time of 14:06.9. Sophomore Ian Mckool also participated in the event finishing in 27th with a time of 14:51:83.
Senior Sebastian Castano was in the Hammer Throw Thursday as well, finishing in ninth place with a his high score of 55.57 meters. This was Cassano’s best score yet in his lengthy career as a Husky.
On Friday, UConn had the bulk of their team performing as some of the underclassmen participated. In the 110 meter hurdles, Sophomore Jordan Torney and Freshman Konstantin Rust finished back to back in 26th and 27th.
Senior Kyle Barber and classmate Michael McGonnigle ran in the 3,000 meter steeplechase amongst a field of 24 other runners. This was Barber’s first time running the event this season. But, even with the lack of recent experience, Barber stilled managed to place ninth with a score of 9:17:00. McGonnigle finished respectively in 22nd with a time of 9:44.31.
On Saturday, Senior Malik Snead finished ninth place in the triple jump with his best jump at 15.42 meters.
The Huskies will be heading to Athens, Georgia, next weekend for the Spec Towns Invitational.
