A month later than originally scheduled, the UConn women’s lacrosse team traveled up to Hanover, New Hampshire, to face off with one of the toughest teams on their schedule this season: the Dartmouth Big Green.
Dartmouth (7-3) would prove to be too much for the Huskies (2-10), as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. The Big Green built their lead up to seven at halftime, and won by a score of 18-9.
Dartmouth has put together a fine season to this point, and it made the Inside Lacrosse Poll’s most recent rankings, coming in at No. 20 in the nation. Unfortunately, the season hasn’t been as kind to UConn, as the team dropped its 10th game of the year.
Sophomore Sam McKenna put up a hat trick in the loss for the Huskies, and captain Caitlin Leary added two goals of her own. Senior Lexi Kenneally had a four-point day on Tuesday with a goal and three assists. The other UConn points were courtesy of sophomore Stephanie Palmucci, freshman Lia LaPrise and freshman Jordan Coulon, who scored her first career goal.
However, the Huskies were never able to get any momentum on the offensive end. With the exception of a three-goal runin the second half to cut the deficit to 13-7, UConn never scored more than one goal in a row all game. Yet the Big Green went on multiple three-goal runs, and they even scored five unanswered goals at one point in the first half.
It certainly wasn’t UConn’s day, as Dartmouth led in almost every single category, including shots on net (31-18), ground balls (24-18) and caused turnovers (12-7). The game would have been even more of a blowout if not for the 13 saves by junior Grace Beshlian.
Dartmouth seemed to get contributions from everyone, as 10 different players scored goals. Leading the team was midfielder Katie Bourque with four goals and one assist, as well as Elizabeth Mastrio, who recorded six points with three goals and three assists.
The Big Green will likely be moving up in the rankings after notching their sixth straight win, while the Huskies will be looking to turn their season around this upcoming weekend. Their next game is on Saturday against conference foe Temple at home. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
