UConn women’s lacrosse (2-12, 0-2 The American) traveled to Reese Stadium to take on the Yale University Bulldogs (5-6, 0-4 Ivy League) and lost the match by six points.
The Bulldogs are No. 7 in their conference out of the eight teams in the Ivy League for women’s lacrosse. Although they haven’t won any games in their conference thus far, they managed to hold off the Huskies.
The Huskies were unable to stop Sam Higgins on the defensive end of the field. She helped create the offense for the Bulldogs and was responsible for eight of their points, in which she attained six assists and two goals of her own. She found her teammate Addie Zinsner to execute three goals, along with Jill Gollob and Olivia Markert, who had a combined three goals from Zinsner.
Yale worked their offense and took advantage of as many shot attempts as possible, putting up 40 shots while the Huskies only took 18.
UConn was led by two underclassmen, Sydney Watson and Lia LaPrise, with four goals a piece. The Huskies scored eight unassisted goals of the 11 scored on the Huskies’ end.
“Yeah, we don’t get as many assisted goals,” said Watson. “But in order to get the goals even unassisted, there has to be movement, or a draw won, or even a caused turnover that needs to happen in order for us to get the opportunity. I think assisted or not, goals wouldn’t happen without us communicating or working as a team to get the opportunity.”
Despite their 17-11 finish, the Huskies had a great start to the game. They just had trouble finishing it out.
“We came out knowing what they’d bring and we wanted to bring more. In the first half we showed it, we wanted it, had great caused turnovers, great opportunities, etc. Second half was more of an up and down time, which I think in the end caused us the game,” Watson said. “We know what we need to do to come out on top. At this point it’s proving we want it and executing. I don’t think it was a step back, but not quite a step forward either. We will just have to work towards the next game and come out on top like we know we can.”
The Huskies surely have a promising future with their underclassmen, regardless of how this season has turned out as it nears an end. They are preparing to play Vanderbilt Sunday, seeking satisfaction in whatever form it may come in, whether it’s a win, great defensive game, or simply high intensity. This team is one that won’t go down without a fight.
