Various restaurants near the University of Connecticut say they experience higher volume sales and clientele on 4/20. Some restaurants, including Pizza Mikes and D.P. Dough offer promotions as well.

D.P. Dough, located on Storrs Road, is doing their annual four calzones for $20 promotion, according to Cory Hill, owner of D.P. Dough.

“We do a week’s worth of business in one day,” Hill said. “4/20 is like our Black Friday.”

Hill said corporate-wide there are marketing efforts through email blasts, Facebook, Instagram and funny YouTube videos.

Leading up to the smoker’s holiday, Hill said he prepares the store and the mentality of his staff leading up to the busy day.

“We make a ton of dough and try to bulk up,” Hill said. “I talk with the staff to make sure we’re mentally ready.”

Pizza Mike’s, located at the “Four Corners” intersection of Route 195 and 44, is working with food delivery service Hungry Button this 4/20.

“In collaboration with Hungry Button, we will be offering a small cheese pizza for $4.20,” Michael LaMothe, owner of Pizza Mike’s, said. “The deal can only be redeemed if customers order through Hungry Button.”

LaMothe said that in the past, orders during the time of the promotion have been heightened.

“(College students) go crazy with the deal, they order much more frequently,” LaMothe said.

Husky Pizza, located on Dog Lane, has participated in promotions in the past, but has decided not to this year.

“We are already really busy on that day,” Husky Pizza owner Matt Akkus said. “In the past while doing the promotion, we couldn’t handle it.”
