The University of Connecticut Undergraduate Student Government (USG) is accepting applications for the 2019-2020 Governing Board, which starting next year will offer paid positions.
“We would love a broad range of perspectives, especially to help complete all the initiatives we have planned,” Priyanka Thakkar, USG President-elect, said. “We want to represent the student body and make sure there are people who are able to listen and react to what students have to say.”
The addition of making the positions paid comes from USG’s recognition of the work that is involved with the role.
“We realize that it takes time to do these jobs and many students do not have the privilege of working without pay,” Thakkar said.
Involvement in USG can build your experience at UConn, Thakkar said.
“The variety of experiences can be added to your time at UConn,” Thakkar said. “As well as being able to enhance the general student body’s.”
Thakkar said no previous USG experience is necessary, but only a passion for advocating change at UConn.
“We would like students who have initiatives they have been working on or know what they would like to do once appointed,” Thakkar said.
The open positions include Chief of Staff to the President, Chief of Staff to the Vice President, Funding Staff Supervisor, External Affairs Chair, Academic Affairs Chair, Student Development Chair, Student Services Chair, Elections and Outreach Director, Operations and Risk Manager and Public Relations Director.
“Once in these positions, you will be working closely with the President and Vice President as well as other members of the Governing Board,” Thakkar said. “You will also be working with administrators who make many of the decisions on campus.”
Students can apply for Governing Board positions at usg.uconn.edu/apply. Applications close Friday, April 26 at midnight.
