Tonight, UConnPIRG — a prominent on-campus student advocacy organization — is holding its Fall kickoff event, where interested students can learn more about the organization and listen to guest speakers before officially commencing campaign work for the semester. The Daily Campus already delved into UConnPIRG’s six primary campaign initiatives, but before they can come into focus, it’s critical to recruit new members (and retain established ones). With this in mind, UConnPIRG runs a multifaceted recruitment drive throughout each semester’s first two-and-a-half weeks. This semester’s drive has well exceeded its initial goals. Regardless of our sentiments toward the organization, there’s no question that UConnPIRG’s various tactics and dedicated leaders contribute to its success and can help other organizations — and even everyday citizens — thrive.
UConnPIRG successfully recruits through tabling, phone-banking, class raps, promotional posters and word of mouth. Their comprehensive approach snags them a large and enthusiastic cohort of underclassmen every year. Their tactics engage freshmen where they’re at, by meeting them in classrooms and on their way to class. UConnPIRG has also been establishing campus relations with UConn administrators and other student organizations. The strengthening of such partnerships throughout the semester should expand UConnPIRG’s reach and facilitate its ability to effect real change.
Ultimately, other organizations would do well to heed UConnPIRG’s successful tactics as we drive ahead, whether we’re affiliated with other student organizations or enduring typical everyday challenges. To learn more about UConnPIRG and commemorate the efforts of its recruitment drive coordinators and other leaders, attend tonight’s kickoff event at 7 pm in SU 304.
