The University of Connecticut athletic department is currently working on a new student section logo after releasing one that copies key features from North Carolina State’s Wolfpack Logo.
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, UConn Athletics released a new logo for “The Pack,” a student section campaign to enhance “the campus spirit,” according to CBS News.
“The fallout that ensued from last week’s announcement was embarrassing and we certainly took our lumps,” Patrick McKenna, Associate Director of Athletics for Athletic Communications said. “However, we will move forward, and I’m confident everyone else will too.”
“The Pack” logo was created by UConn undergraduate students, according to Yahoo! Sports. McKenna said that undergraduate students will still be working under the direction of athletics marketing to help create a new logo.
“It is our desire that students take an ownership stake in this new initiative so, we definitely plan on students continuing to be involved in a meaningful way,” McKenna said.
“The Pack” logo has since been removed from social media, according to a statement from the athletics department last Thursday.
“We committed an unacceptable misstep by using an NC State mark as a centerpiece of this logo,” the statement said. “As soon as the mistake came to light, we removed the logo from all our digital platforms and reached out to NC State to apologize. The apology was accepted in generous fashion by NC State and we will be taking corrective actions internally to ensure something of this nature never happens again.”
Internal measures have been taken to ensure that the new logo will be original, McKenna said. He said that he does not know what the logo may look like.
“At this time, our plan is to hit the reset button and begin this process anew,” McKenna said.
