Food Fight: The Potato Multiverse

Here, the authors debate between which way of eating potatoes is best: shoestring fries or roasted potatoes. Illustration by Van Nguyen/The Daily Campus.

Welcome back to the second article of food fight with The Daily Campus. Every week, we will discuss two of our favorite foods or orders and determine who wins. This week, we are diving into the multiverse of potatoes and deciding what the best way of eating potatoes is.

Naiiya: Shoestring fries; today, tomorrow and forever

You can interpret my argument to mean fries in general or specifically shoestring fries, but it is obvious that fries are the best way to eat potatoes. When you think of potatoes, you think of fries. Don’t deny it!

Fries are the perfect American food but have a cultural background way beyond that. Have you ever had a gyro with fries? Perfection. Don’t even get me started on loaded fries which become the perfect vessel for toppings. They can be eaten 1,000 different ways and it’s still just one form of potatoes.

I will eat shoestring fries for hours. They are exactly what I imagine when someone says, “Let’s get fries for the table.” I love the idea of going to dinner, getting a crisp Coca-Cola, Caesar salad and shoestring fries. There is no argument that they aren’t the best side dish with a burger or sandwich; they can even be their own meal.

Charlotte: Seasoned roasted potatoes all day every day

There’s something about roasted potatoes. Maybe it’s the crispy golden exterior and buttery soft inside, or maybe it’s the flavor of the herbs and spices uniting with the potato flavor, but any way you look at it, roasted potatoes are delicious. I live and die for the browned edges of a good roasted potato — bonus points if it’s one of the small purple or yellow potatoes! I’ll be honest, I’m not usually much of a potato skin fan, but on a roasted potato, the skin provides a fun texture and flavor that works well with the rest of the potato.

Roasted potatoes are simple to make and are overall one of the best (and relatively healthy) ways to have potatoes. Cube some potatoes, coat them in olive oil, liberally sprinkle salt, pepper and a couple pinches of fresh rosemary, thyme or oregano, stick them in the oven and you’ve got a great side for dinner, a fun snack or maybe an entrée on its own! A plate of homemade roasted potatoes crisped to perfection is one of the best foods ever, hands down.

Potato Pact

Potatoes are great just about any way you have them, whether you prefer them baked, roasted, fried or all of the above. Even if Naiiya finds roasted potatoes to be horrible or Charlotte wants an adult side, there is no wrong way to eat a potato, unless your favorite is potato salad. Some things are better off not covered in mayo and mustard with boiled eggs.
